Be Prepared to Respond to the Following:

1). When was Jesus born? How do we know?
- 6 BC
- Herod died in 4 BC.


2). What information helps us know when the ministry of Jesus began?
- He was baptized by John first and then went out to preach.


3). Be able to define the words apocrypha and pseudipigrapha. How many writings are in each collection?
- 14 Jewish books written between 200 BC and AD 100 included in both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible for Catholics but not for Protestants.
- It means "unauthentic" or "false."
- They talk about religious, political, and social conditions.
- The Protestant apocrypha has 3 books.
- The Catholic apocrypha has 12 books.
- The pseudepigrapha has 14 books.


4). Be able to describe the 4 criteria used in the early church to verify which books were canonical and inspired.
- There are 4 Marks before it.


5). What is the concept of honor and shame and why was it important in New Testament times?
- Honor is when you are respected, and shame is when you are looked down upon.  It must have been important to Jesus's teachings, especially, to help him preach and solve problems.


6). What were the languages spoken in the land of Palestine in Jesus’ day?
- Aramaic, Hebrew, Greek


7). Pick one of the following three groups and describe them: Sadducees; Pharisees; Scribes
- They were leaders of Israel but were against Jesus. They were copyists and teachers.  They are the reason we have the Bible today.  They were of commonfolk and associated with priests.  They were knowledgeable of the Jewish religion.


8). Be able to give an outline of Matthew, Mark, Luke’s, or John’s Gospel.
- Luke -
- The birth of John the Baptist is announced.
- The birth of Jesus is announced.
- Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth.
- John the Baptist is born.
- Jesus is born.
- Jesus socializes in the temple at age 12.
- John the Baptist baptizes Jesus.
- Jesus is tempted by the devil.
- Jesus preaches and performs miracles.
- Jesus has his last supper.
- Jesus is arrested.
- Jesus dies on the cross.
- Jesus raises from the dead.


9). Be familiar with the distinct characteristics Matthew and Luke’s Gospels.
- Matthew traced Jesus's ancestry more, but both Gospels list the same outline it seems.
- Matthew does not mention the angel appearing to Mary.
- Luke doesn't include the angel visiting Joseph.
- Luke, Jesus is born in a barn.
- Luke talks about Elizabeth and John the Baptist.
